A few facts about Togo:

Where it is / capital:
A narrow country between Ghana and Benin with a short Gulf of Guinea coastline; the capital and largest city is Lomé.

Population: ~8.6 million (2025 est.).

Languages: French is official; widely spoken local languages include Ewe (south) and Kabiye (north).

Government update: In 2024 Togo adopted a new constitution shifting to a more parliamentary system (president chosen by parliament; a powerful “President of the Council of Ministers” leads government).

Economy & exports: Agriculture plus phosphate mining are key; cash crops include cotton, coffee, cocoa. Encyclopedia Britannica+1

Port of Lomé: A major West African container hub—about 2.0 million TEUs handled in 2024 (ranked among the region’s busiest). Togofirst+1

Culture & heritage: Religiously mixed (Christianity, Islam, and traditional Vodun). The Koutammakou landscape (Batammariba mud tower-houses) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Independence: Gained independence from France on April 27, 1960.
